Christmas

When Christmas is over

December 29, 20243 min read

It's that time of year, when Christmas is over...

The tree stands tall, its branches now a little less vibrant, the once-fresh aroma of pine fading into memory. You've watched all the Christmas movies and listened to all your favorite Christmas albums. The twinkling lights that once heralded the season begin to feel dim, and the cheerful gifts wrapped under the tree are now crumpled paper and bows lying in the recycle bin. Christmas is over, and the world feels like it’s collectively exhaling.

But what now?

Christmas

As the hustle of the holidays quiets, we are left with a profound opportunity to reflect on everything the season brings. The gifts exchanged, the meals shared, the carols sung—all of these are beautiful reminders of the season. But you see..they are just temporary. The true gift of Christmas- that is eternal. It is the gift of Emmanuel, God with us, a most precious gift that lingers long after the decorations are packed away. O come, O come Emmanuel....

In the days that follow Christmas, it can be tempting to immediately dive back into the busyness of life. During Christmas, everything almost seems to pause or slow down...and then it's over. New Year’s resolutions loom, work demands resurface, and the routines of ordinary days beckon us forward. But before we rush ahead, let us pause and rest. In Matthew 11:28 (KJV), Jesus invites us, saying, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Let this be a season of spiritual renewal, where we find solace in His presence.

What are some of the gifts God has given you—not the ones wrapped in bows, but the ones wrapped in His grace. The laughter of loved ones, the warmth of a home, the hope of salvation. These are the treasures that don’t fade with time but grow richer as we nurture gratitude in our hearts. Oh how we need to create space and room in the midst of the chaos to be thankful.

As you prepare for the year ahead, consider how you can carry the spirit of Christmas into the ordinary days. Maybe it’s a commitment to show more grace to others, to serve in your community, or to spend more time in God’s Word. Psalm 90:12 (KJV) reminds us, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Let’s be intentional with the time and gifts we have been given, Friends.

Christmas may be over, but the story of Christ is far from finished!

As you fold up the season, don’t pack away the joy, the hope, and the peace that came with it. Carry it forward as a light into the new year, remembering that the same God who came to dwell with us in Bethlehem goes with us every day of the year. Rest in His promises, reflect on His goodness, and step boldly into the future He has prepared for you.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, here we are with quiet hearts and minds...at the threshold of a new year. Christmas is over...but Your story for my life is far from over. Help me to remember the good gifts You have given me, and never taken one single breath for granted. Thank you for Christmas, and until the season comes around again...help us all continue to grow in Your grace and knowledge. Amen."
